Frequently asked questions

How do I install Regionly?

Install it from the Shopify App Store and approve the permissions. The app opens in your Shopify admin under Apps > Regionly.

How do I turn on the app embed?

On the Regionly home page, click Open theme editor. The Regionly embed is switched on for you; click Save in the theme editor. The home page then shows App embed is on. If you change your theme later, turn the embed on again for the new theme.

How does country blocking work?

Turn on Enable country blocking, choose Block selected countries or Allow only selected countries, pick countries and save. Blocked visitors see your own title and message instead of the store. If your store's country or your current location would be blocked, the app shows a warning so you don't lock yourself out.

Will blocking hurt my SEO or ads?

Blocking does not stop verified crawlers. Requests that say they come from Google (including AdsBot), Bing, Apple, DuckDuckGo, Yandex, Baidu, Pinterest or Meta are checked against the company's official IP list or by reverse and forward DNS, and verified crawlers are always allowed. A request that only copies a crawler's name is treated like any other visitor. Other link preview bots (for example Slack or WhatsApp) follow your rules like normal visitors. To confirm that Google can see your pages, use URL Inspection in Google Search Console. Strict mode can lower page speed scores (see below).

Can visitors get around storefront blocking?

Storefront blocking runs in the visitor's browser, so a determined visitor can bypass it, for example with a VPN, by turning JavaScript off or by blocking Regionly's request; the store then opens as usual. Direct checkout links and your store's public product data are not covered either. Checkout rules (Pro) run inside Shopify checkout and block the order itself, and Flag risky orders (Pro) tags orders for review.

A customer traveling abroad is blocked. What can I do?

Regionly decides by the visitor's current IP address, so a customer traveling in a blocked country sees the block page. Check my setup → Preview another country shows what visitors from that country see. To let them in, remove that country from your list, or turn on Log only for a while. On Pro you can add the customer's current IP address to Allowed IPs (they can find it by searching "what is my IP"); hotel and mobile networks change IPs often. After you save, ask them to open your store in a new tab or window; a tab that already shows the block page keeps it. Visitor IPs are not stored in the Block log, only a salted hash.

Why can a blocked visitor see my store for a moment?

Regionly checks each visitor with a quick request when the page loads. To keep your store fast, visitors are not hidden while that check runs, so a first-time visitor from a blocked country can see your store until Regionly answers (in our tests from Thailand, 0.6 to 3.4 seconds) before the block page. Browsers that were blocked in the last 24 hours stay hidden until the check finishes. If you prefer, turn on Strict mode on the Home page: every visitor sees a blank page until the check finishes (at most 1.5 seconds). This may lower page speed scores; in our mobile Lighthouse test it cost up to 4 points and delayed the main content by up to about 1 second.

Does Regionly block VPNs?

Not personal VPNs. With network rules (Pro) you can block Tor exit nodes and the IP ranges of AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Oracle Cloud and DigitalOcean, where many bots and some hosted VPNs and proxies run. VPNs and proxies that use home or mobile connections look like normal visitors and are not detected.

Can I test rules before they block anyone?

Yes. Turn on Log only for country rules, network rules or checkout rules. Nobody is blocked; visits that would be blocked appear in the Block log as Would block, and matching orders appear under Flagged orders as Log only. Check my setup shows how the current rules treat your own connection.

What do checkout rules do? (Pro)

They stop checkout when the shipping or billing country, the email address or domain, or the phone prefix matches your rules. They apply to all checkouts, including Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay. If the check itself fails, checkout continues, so an error on our side does not stop a good order.

What does Flag risky orders do? (Pro)

New orders whose shipping or billing address matches your country or checkout rules, or that come from the same IP address that was blocked on your storefront, get the tag regionly:review and appear in the Block log. The IP match can miss: many connections use IPv6 at checkout while storefront blocking sees IPv4. You can also hold fulfillment for these orders until you review them.

What happens when I uninstall?

Shopify removes the app embed, so no Regionly code runs on your storefront. Your theme settings file may keep a reference to the old embed; it does nothing once the app is removed. Checkout rules stop, and your settings, block log and flagged order list are deleted from our servers right away, so a later reinstall starts with fresh settings. If you reinstall, Shopify may turn the app embed on again automatically.

How much does it cost?

Free: block or allow up to 3 countries, verified crawler protection, Log only mode and a 7-day block log. Pro ($6.99/month, 7-day free trial): unlimited countries, checkout rules, network rules (IP lists, Tor, cloud networks), redirects and risky order review. You can change plans any time from the app.
